The short version
This Privacy Policy explains how Splitt ("Splitt", "we", "us") collects, uses and protects personal information when you use the Splitt website and app (the "Service"). Splitt is operated from South Africa, and this policy follows the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 ("POPIA"). It applies whether you use Splitt as a guest (no account) or with an account.
Guests: people using Splitt without an account. When you create a bill or join one from a shared link, we store the name you type (a first name or nickname is enough) and what you claim or owe on that bill. We also store a random device identifier and a guest-session identifier in your browser. These are not linked to your real identity; they let you come back to your bill on the same device. We don't ask guests for an email address, phone number or anything else.
People added by someone else. The person who creates a bill can add others by name before they've opened the link. In that case we hold only the name and the amount entered for them.
Account holders. If you register with email, we collect your email address, a hashed password and the display name you choose. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name, email address and (for Google) a profile photo URL from that provider. We never see your Google or Apple password. You can also upload a profile photo and save app preferences.
Bill data. The occasion description, venue, total, tip, split method, line items, who claimed which items, and each person's share and settled status.
Receipt photos. If you scan a receipt, we store the photo and the line items read from it. Receipts can show things like the last digits of a card or a waiter's name. Feel free to cover anything you'd rather not share before taking the photo.
Location (optional). If you choose to add a location to a bill, your browser shares your device's GPS position. We use it to look up the suburb and store the venue, suburb and coordinates with the bill. You can skip this or type a place instead.
Feedback. If you send feedback, we store your rating and comments, plus your name and email if you choose to give them.
Acceptance records. When you create or join a bill, or register, we record the date and the version of these terms you agreed to.
Technical data. Our servers keep standard logs (such as IP address and request time) for security and troubleshooting. We use your browser's local storage to keep you signed in and to keep a copy of your recent bills on your device. We don't use tracking cookies, advertising networks or third-party analytics.
Under POPIA we process this information because it is needed to provide the Service you asked for, because we have a legitimate interest in keeping Splitt secure and working, or because you consented (for example, when you choose to share your location).
Anyone who opens a bill's share link and enters its table code can see the bill's details: the occasion, venue, items, the names on the bill and the amounts owed. Only share links with the people at your table. The table code exists so a link forwarded to the wrong chat can't be used on its own.
We use a small number of service providers to run Splitt. They may only use your information to provide their service to us:
We do not sell your personal information, and we don't share it with advertisers. We may disclose information if the law requires us to.
Splitt does not process payments or move money. We work out who owes what; settling up happens directly between the people on the bill, outside the Service. We never ask for card or bank account details.
Some of the providers above process information outside South Africa (mainly in the United States). We only use providers that are bound by data-protection laws or contract terms that give a level of protection similar to POPIA, as section 72 of POPIA requires.
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Receipt photos | Guest bills: deleted 30 days after the bill is created. The line items stay on the bill. Bills in an account: kept so you can refer back to them, until you remove the receipt from the bill or delete your account. |
| Guest names on a bill | Replaced with "Guest 1", "Guest 2" and so on 90 days after the bill is created. Amounts and items stay, so everyone's history still adds up. |
| Guest device and session identifiers, and precise location | Removed from the bill after 90 days. The venue and suburb stay. |
| Account details, and your name on bills you're part of | For as long as your account is open. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete it or anonymise it. |
| Feedback | Comments are kept. Your name and email are removed after 12 months. |
| Acceptance records | For as long as the related bill or account exists. |
| Data stored in your browser | Until you sign out or clear your browser data. |
We may keep information longer if the law requires it or if it's needed to deal with a security incident or dispute.
Passwords are hashed, traffic is encrypted (HTTPS), bill links can be protected with a table code, and access to our systems is restricted. No system is perfectly secure. If a security breach affects your personal information, we will tell the Information Regulator, and tell you where we can identify you, as POPIA requires.
Under POPIA you have the right to:
If someone added your name to a bill and you'd like it removed, email us the bill link (or the venue and date) and we'll replace your name with a placeholder. Contact us at support@splitt.co.za. We'll respond within a reasonable time, normally within 30 days.
Splitt is meant for people aged 18 or older, or younger people using it with a parent's or guardian's permission. A parent can add a child to a family bill by first name. We don't knowingly collect anything else about children. If you believe a child's information was added inappropriately, contact us and we'll remove it.
We may update this policy. When we make material changes, we'll update the date above and, if you have an account, show you a notice in the app.
Splitt is operated by Aran Reddy, who is also our Information Officer under POPIA. Email support@splitt.co.za, or write to 168 Bellairs Dr, Northriding, Randburg, 2169.
